Vision Rehabilitation

Occupational therapists are trained to identify and treat difficulties with visual perception and control of eye movements. Visual perception is the ability to recognize and identify qualities of objects in order to make accurate judgments on the size and spatial relationships of the objects (Schneck, 2005). Ocular motor skills are the eyes’ ability to work together in a coordinated fashion. (It is important to note that occupational therapists do not address reduced visual acuity and the need for corrective lenses, as this is addressed by an optometrist).

Visual perception and ocular motor skills are evaluated through standardized assessments, such as

The Beery-Buktencia Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration

The Test of Visual Perceptual Skills, and various clinical observations.

Advanta's Vision Therapy Program offers comprehensive visual perceptual rehabilitation for individuals who have hand-eye coordination problems or visual perceptual difficulties as the result of a stroke, brain injury, or other neurological disorder.

Our occupational therapists work collaboratively with patients’ physicians which may include physiatrists, ophthalmologists, neurologists, and specialized neuro-optometrists to develop specialized treatments that address the specific needs of each patient. State-of-the-art equipment used in this program includes

During treatment, therapists work closely with patients to improve the skills necessary for reading, writing, cooking, shopping, and safe travel within the community, with the aim of helping them reach the highest possible level of independence in all daily activities.
