Functional Extremities Training

 

     Patients suffering from hemiparesis (weakness on one side of the body) as a result of a stroke or other neurological conditions may benefit from one of both of the following programs.

    

Occupational Therapy

 

  • Individuals who exhibit some shoulder, elbow, wrist and finger movement may benefit from the use of devices made by Saebo, Inc., a company specializing in orthotics for people with impaired arm and hand function.

 

     This program includes custom fitting of these devices as well as training sessions          with passive and active movement to maintain range of motion, gross motor and          fine exercise equipment to promote “grasp and release” abilities and restore                functional arm and hand use.

 

  • Selected patients may also benefit from the use of electrical stimulation to restore upper extremity function. This program utilizes the Bioness H200, a device that surrounds the patient’s hand and forearm and works to stimulate muscles and movement in the hand.

 

     

   The occupational therapist will determine how best to incorporate the use of these devices into the patient’s treatment plan, and will develop therapeutic programs designed to activate the patient’s upper extremity and incorporate its use into everyday tasks.

 

Occupational Therapy Service for STROKE
