Barrier Free Design

This program addresses the frequent barriers in everyday environments that can hinder a person's ability to function independently. Examples include stairs that are no longer negotiable, a bathtub that has become difficult to get in and out of, or a limited living or working space that doesn’t allow freedom of movement for someone using a wheelchair.

In the Barrier-Free Design program, an occupational therapist with expertise in rehabilitation, design, and local and national building codes will recommend individualized design solutions for creating a safe and accessible home environment, using structural design elements and specialized equipment that enhance the patient’s capabilities while also meeting environmental and architectural needs.

Based on the patient and family’s needs, these recommendations may include:

Occupational Therapy

  • ramps (custom, portable and modular)

  • wheelchair lifts or elevators

  • stair lifts (chair glides)

  • lifting devices (ceiling track or portable systems)

Once a comprehensive functional evaluation and in-home environmental assessment is completed, the occupational therapist may provide a detailed report of recommendations, including guidelines for construction, scale drawings and advice on how to obtain specialized equipment and products.
