Physical therapists play an essential role in virtually every condition that rehabilitation medicine addresses. The goal of physical therapy is to improve mobility, restore functional movement, increase independence, relieve pain, and minimize limitations due to permanent disabilities. To accomplish this, the physical therapist develops individualized programs tailored to each patient’s specific needs, which may include working on areas such as strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. Physical therapy sessions, exercises and activities are used to remove obstacles to movement and educate the patient on how to move safely around the environment. The therapist also works with the attending physician and other medical staff to manage pain, so that the patient is able to receive the greatest possible benefit from therapy. The physical therapist will also typically provide a home exercise program, and recommend equipment and/or orthotics that will enable the patient to continue working independently on his or her mobility.
